The
HPI model 4080 CANARY II is a small electronic pocket dosimeter.
It is the ideal measurement instrument for anyone working in or
around gamma radiation. It clips conveniently to a pocket, belt
or lanyard and is only slightly larger than most security badges.
The CANARY II has a digital display and a built-in beeper. Not only
does it measure the dose from 0.01mR to 10 R, but it will also chirp
every 10 uR. At background levels this is an average of about 1
beep per hour, or at 10 mR/h a beep every 3 or 4 seconds.
The battery life is very long; 40 days of continuous operation or
6 months of normal use at 8 hours/day, 5 days/week. The lithium
batteries have a storage life of 10 years which makes the CANARY
II ideal for emergency kits.
The recessed on-off switch is the only external control. When the
instrument is turned on it resets the display and beeps. The length
of the beep indicates the battery condition. The chirp every 0.01
mR can be turned off by removing a replaceable internal jumper.
The rugged black anodized aluminum case is held together with a
thumbscrew and slides apart to change the battery. It has a convenient
clothing protector clip.
