The
Field Unit is a recording environmental monitor that is designed
to collect the history of radiation levels over an extended period
of time under adverse field conditions. Once the instrument is started,
it measures the penetrating radiation level for a preset interval,
stores the information in its memory and repeats the sequence until
it is stopped or the memory is full. Using a five minute interval,
it can store up to two weeks of time correlated data.
The instrument has the capability of starting the storing procedure
at a predetermined date and time, and displaying all the preset
parameters as well as the present and maximum dose rates. To obtain
a history of the radiation levels since the Field Unit was started,
the external connector has a serial communications link for interrogating,
changing all keyed in values, and for data retrieval. A computer
program is available to obtain the data from the Field Unit. A hard
copy of all the data can then be printed or saved.
The data is also transmitted from the communications link every
minute. This allows the instrument to be used as an autonomous field
area monitor.
The 16 key keyboard is used to display and change all the important
internal parameters. This includes, among others, a user number
to facilitate tracking of the data, battery hours, status and of
course the data. Numeric data is entered with the 16 key keyboard.
A special mode is used to calibrate the instrument.
The Field Unit uses an energy compensated GM detector. The waterproof
case is constructed of high impact plastic with a gasket seal which
must be opened to gain access to the keyboard and batteries.
